MUSIC

I love music. Who doesn’t? Music is awesome. Besides, what would a movie be without music? There are so many iconic film scenes that are as iconic because of the music added to it all. Music stands strong alone, but a film wouldn’t be much without music.

I’m a sucker for good ol’ rock songs. I love the ones from the fifties, I love the ones from the 90’s, but nothing is as good as the ones from the 70’s. Here are some of my favorite songs that you just have to check out if you haven’t already. And yes, I’ve discovered most, if not all, by watching movies from the good old days.

WALK OF LIFE
Dire Straits
My number one song of all time. This song feels like home, and it’s just the most cheery song I’ve ever heard. It has never ever ever failed to make me smile, even on the days when I just feel like crying… wow, deep. It’s a great song. Listen to it. Oh, and since anyone who’s reading this is probably a fellow film fanatic, go check out ‘The Walk of Live Project’. It’s a project based on the theory that every film ever made can and should end with Dire Strait’s Walk of Life. The brilliant guy who came up with this idea made a few examples with films like Casablanca, Gran Torino, Jurassic Park, The Godfather, The Lion King and a whole lot of other titles. Go watch it. You’ll feel good inside.

COME SAIL AWAY
Styxx
I first heard this song in the pilot of Freaks and Geeks, and it just made me feel like I was floating on clouds or something. The hairs on my arm arose and my life was never the same again. For the longest time I actually thought this song was about sailing away on a boat, which reminded me of the summer vacations my family had growing up. It actually wasn’t that long ago that I realized it was really all about aliens. Kind of. I love it.

FOREVER YOUNG
Alphaville
Who doesn’t want to be forever young? Come Sail Away is far from the only song I’ve ever discovered by watching tv. I first heard Forever Young in an episode of The OC some years ago, a really weird version of it, anyway. I had to look the song up, and since that day, Alphaville’s original Forever Young has never left my playlist.

I’M GONNA BE (500 MILES)
The Proclaimers
Okay, I’m starting to sense a pattern here. Shouldn’t be too hard for you to guess this one though, I mean, what famous comedy show has an entire episode featuring The Proclaimer’s I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)?

STAND BY ME
Ben E. King
Just like the 1986′ adventure-drama Stand By Me is one of my favorite films, the Ben E. King song of which the movies’ title is based upon, is one of my favorite songs. It’s just the most beautiful song ever written, my eyes water up just by hearing my brain sing the chorus right now.

WALKING IN MEMPHIS
Marc Cohn
I can’t decide if I like Marc Cohn’s version or Cher’s version of Walking In Memphis better. I love them both. I wrote Marc Cohn because he wrote the song, but I think I’ve actually listened more to Cher’s version in the past. Anyways, who doesn’t get the chills when the piece about the ghost of Elvis comes.

DREAM A LITTLE DREAM OF ME
Cover by The Mamas and the Papas
This is a beautiful song. That’s all I’m going to say. And Mama Cass does a remarkable job at making this song even more beautiful than it already is.

COME ON EILEEN
Dexys Midnight Runners
This song makes me smile. Simple as that.

SOMEBODY TO LOVE
Queen
Queen is and will probably always be, one of my absolute favorite bands. I adore the whole choir-thing they’ve got going on. There are so many of their songs that I consider to be favorites, but Somebody To Love will always be a special one. This is one of those songs that I could just burst out in song, whether it be in the shower or on the bus, whenever the chorus comes on. Can anybody find me somebody to loooooove! And I’m not even a romantic.

RED RED WINE
UB40
I don’t drink red wine. This fact is proof that my love for the musical arts of UB40’s Red Red Wine is genuine.

I GOT YOU, BABE
Sonny & Cher
This is a favorite from when I was growing up, which yes, really wasn’t that long ago. But it stills warms my heart.

I’LL BE FINE
Clairy Browne and The Bangin’ Rackettes
This song is a pretty recent favorite. I discovered it while watching Please Like Me on Netflix and, MY GOD, how great is this song? It’s like three minutes of Christmas, except it doesn’t have anything to do with Christmas.

DON’T STOP ME NOW
Queen
No one has ever in history of people, listened to this song without being in a great mood when the “Don’t stop me now ’cause I’m having such a good time,” arrives. Of course this isn’t a real fact, but it proves my point.

SWEET HOME ALABAMA
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Because, why not? Sweet Home Alabama is such a fun song, it’s definitely impossible to not sing along while listening to it.

ROCKET MAN (I THINK IT’S GONNA BE A LONG LONG TIME)
Elton John
Lastly… Rocket Man. Who doesn’t love this song? I think, no one.

Hmhm, some of my favorites. Yeah, right.
